The Mid-Century Homes Office: A Story of Preservation and Transformation

Celebrating the new Mid-Century Homes Office space at 3130 W. State Street!

If this architectural beauty looks familiar, there's a good reason. This mid-century gem, originally known as the “Forty-Four & Sixty-Six Service Station,” has long been admired by Boise's mid-century enthusiasts—and for good reason. Built in 1964, the building isn’t just a relic of the past; it’s a rare masterpiece showcasing the signature design of renowned architect C. Harold “Hal” Reinhardt. Most notably, it features Reinhardt’s iconic “bat wing” canopy, making it a true standout in Boise's architectural landscape.

3130 W State Street: A New Chapter for this Mid-Century Gem

Tucked along a classic stretch of Boise’s W State Street, 3130 W State Street is more than just a cool mid-century building—it’s a piece of Boise’s history that’s been given a second life. Built in 1964, this beauty was originally known as the “Forty-Four & Sixty-Six Service Station” and spent its early days fueling up cars and capturing the optimism of the post-war boom. But let’s be real—it’s way more than just a former gas station. Designed by the legendary C. Harold “Hal” Reinhardt, it’s the only building in town featuring his signature “bat wing” canopy, making it a true mid-century standout.

Fast forward to today, and this once-functional service station has been transformed into a stunning example of mid-century preservation done right. TJ, myself, and the entire team at Boise Mid-Century Homes saw the potential from the start. We knew this gem had to be handled with care, ensuring every inch reflected the timeless design we love while bringing it into the modern era as a functional workspace.

Of course, we couldn’t have done it without the incredible vision of Thames and Stacy Kral, who saw something special long before we did. In 2019, they went all in—getting the building listed on the National Register of Historic Places, officially making it the first gas station in Idaho to earn that honor. Talk about setting the bar high! Their passion and hard work paid off in a big way when, in 2020, they received the coveted Orchid Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation. It’s safe to say their efforts made all of this possible.

And let’s not forget about the amazing folks at Preservation Idaho, who continue to champion efforts like this across the state. Their commitment to keeping Boise’s mid-century landmarks alive and thriving is nothing short of inspiring, and their support has been key in making sure treasures like 3130 W State Street remain part of the city’s fabric for years to come.

Today, we’re proud to call this space our home base at Boise Mid-Century Homes. But it’s more than just an office—it’s a living, breathing example of what happens when you honor the past while embracing the future. Every detail, from the carefully restored canopy to the thoughtfully updated interiors, tells a story of preservation, passion, and, of course, a whole lot of mid-century love.

If you’re as excited as we are, keep an eye out for our upcoming open house. It’s your chance to step inside, soak up the history, and experience first-hand what makes this place so special.

Boise’s mid-century community is thriving, and 3130 W State Street is proof that when you mix vision, passion, and a deep respect for good design, amazing things can happen.

Our new home, 3130 W State Street, is a rare gem... It’s a striking example of mid-century architecture, frozen in time yet still full of life.
